Kallidain, this is a thread to discuss what we talked about yesterday (where should we host the web site)

I have the domain name and can point it at any url we choose, so trying another site is easy.

Here are the pros and cons as I see them of hosting on my site:

pros:
1. free
2. has user management (ie when you register you can see different content and we can restrict access to content or pages, this is not being used much now, because the members only content has not been written)
3. flexible content (there are premade modules i can drop into pages easily such as links, polls, text areas, images, screen scraping (such as the server status module) and i can write custom java modules as well)
4. easy to create new pages (it takes me 5 minutes to make a new page IF i have the content to put on it)
5. flexible UI (I can customize the look of the whole site by changing one jsp (if I know what people want and have the time to do it Smile )

cons:
1. administration is complicated (i can do it easy becuase i know the system and delegating it to others is doable but having others learn the system is not trivial)
2. slow (it is hosted on my dsl connection)
3. we would not pass the bus test (if i get run over by a bus we are screwed)

Kall, can you post your thoughts about the pros and cons of doing a html based site on infopop ?

my thoughts are it would at least be:
1. faster
2. would be using less complicated technology

More pros and cons..

W/Infopop hosting..
1. Its free(since I have connections) Smile
2. It's an Apache web server with PHP and MYSQL database if we need it.
3. We can control user authentication in Apache and possibly tie that into the message boards.
4. Easier for others to update it.

Also, it comes with new message boards. Infopop provides UBB.x which is essentially the same thing as Opentopic except it uses a MYSql database instead of Oracle. They have tools to do an xml import of all the content on Opentopic...except for attachments such as pictures. We could also just keep using Opentopic.

Dav and I have been playing around with the Infopop webhosting. One problem I have to resolve before we do anything is that my wife was going to let her sister use it for her web site. I am still trying to find out if she is going to use it or if I can write some script that will redirect people based upon the URL typed into the browser.

pros:

1. We can get the-enclave.com e-mail adresses Big Grin
2. The old website we used for AC1 loads perfectly into DreamWeaver and just needs new content

cons:

1. Need Dreamweaver to edit and update the old site properly; very easy to use though.

Jo, I guess we are all lucky. My girlfriend is a real Warcraft nut. She loves the game. Then I showed her AC and DAOC. You can expect both of us in WoW. Smile
